How to clean wood kitchen cabinets

Mar 12, 2021

Kitchens are the most used and abused area of any home. Not only do they need continuous cleaning and scrubbing but can be extremely tricky to maintain. Generally, spot cleaning kitchen cabinets are not that hard. You just need a cleaner and you are good to go. However, when it comes to finding a process and product that removes grime and grease, it takes quite a bit of patience and label research to find the best solution for your surface. It gets especially tricky if you have to find a product that also protects your newly painted exterior.

Before we begin to explore the best options for cleaning kitchen cabinets, remember that simple re-organization of your storage space can go a long way in ensuring that you find ample time to load your dishwasher and find your things amidst the clutter. Having said that, one constant complaint that homemakers encounter is the cleanliness of kitchen cabinets.

Using a commercial cleaner is a great start. Many cleaners have either all-purpose (which are suitable for even wooden surfaces) or even ‘specific wooden surfaces properties’ which are good for your wooden kitchen cabinets. If you are a DIY person and cleaning is a therapy, why not try some DIY cleaning liquids which can be easily made from the ingredients in your kitchen. Not only are these cleaners affordable but are definitely much more eco-friendly.

Vinegar is one of the best and natural go-to cleaners. Just mix a 50/50 solution of vinegar and warm water and put it in a spray bottle. Spray the mixture on cabinets, let it sit for a couple of minutes and then wipe clean with a soft cloth. You can also add a few drops of liquid dishwashing detergent to the solution for extremely grimy cabinets.

Irrespective of the kind of cleaner you choose, the basic method of cleaning wood kitchen cabinets is the same:

Start with using a soft washcloth or a thick sponge with a cleaner to wipe on the outer surface of your cabinet doors or drawers. You can also use tiny amounts of elbow grease if you notice some grease or grime buildup.

The next step is to wipe the cleaner on drawers and door handles. Make sure to use a softer cloth so that it can easily bend and reach the back of a handle.

For cleaning the cabinets, you can use a toothbrush dipped in the cleaner. If your cabinet doors have some patterns on them use a toothbrush to swab through the crevices of ornate trim.

After using the cleaner, make sure to wipe it completely dry from all surfaces. Leaving the cleaner on can cause foul odour and staining.

Finally, dry all the surfaces with a dry cloth and keep the cabinets open for a while before filling them with utensils and groceries again.
