Kitchen Trends for 2019: Two-Toned Cabinets

Mar 10, 2019

Minimalistic yet bold kitchens have been on the rise for the last few years. The designs get cleaner without sacrificing personality. The kitchen is one of the most frequently used rooms in the home, which is why so much goes into making it as beautiful and functional as possible. For 2019, one of the major trends of the year is two-toned cabinetry. Who says having uniform cabinets had to be standard practice? These will add personality without forfeiting functionality. Here’s how you can transform your kitchen with this trendy look.

Choose Your Focal Point

Focusing the two-toned cabinetry on a specific area will create a wonderful effect no matter your kitchen’s layout. Select where in your kitchen you want the focal point of these cabinets to be. If you have an island, then have the cabinets there be purple or blue, drawing the eye there, while the rest of the cabinets are neutral. If not, then have your upper and lower cabinets be two separate colours. Or why not have them be interchangeable, one colour after the other? It’s up to you, as long as you make a statement somehow.

Don’t Mind the Paint

If having two different paint colours for your cabinets isn’t something you’re interested in, then don’t worry. There are other ways you can have two-toned cabinets without bold colours. Have your cabinets be two separate materials altogether! While the base material is typically wood, you could mix and match glass with aluminum doors, or laminate for a unique design. It’s completely up to your style and decor.

Darken the Bottom Cabinets

Having darker cabinets on the bottom and lighter cabinets on top not only creates a design statement but it also opens up your entire kitchen. The bold colouring below grounds the space while the lighter shades draw the eyes towards the ceiling. If your top cabinet colour matches your ceilings, your kitchen will look much grander than ever before. Or you could even try to pull off an ombre effect by staying in the same colour family: dark blue on the bottom and light blue on the top.

Cabinet Coordination

Having two-toned cabinets can create a bold and unique look for your kitchen, but things might get a bit crazy if the cabinets are too different. Two distinct designs in one space will make it feel unbalanced, as though something was lost in translation. Include an element that links both sets of cabinets together, like the overall structure or the same hardware. Subtle similarities will allow both cabinet colours or styles to live cohesively with one another.
